To RAID or not RAID?

Postby Stroh » Thu Dec 10, 2009 4:39 am

Seeing as it has slowly been becoming the standard in the hosting industry and with the advancement of hard drives, do you RAID? I have decided to do Raid 1+0 on one of my servers and I have to say I've noticed a small increase in write speeds.

Yes, we do RAID-10 for every server. Specially for VPS Servers.

SATA Disks are cheaper, and RAID-10 is a cheap way to get the performance of a SAS 15k RPM disk.

Of course, RAID is a need for the hosting providers. Every provider that want to get more security about the information they host should at least use RAID-1.

For security ALWAYS use RAID-1 for any service.

Today hard drives are too slow comparing to processors capacity, if needed use RAID-10, there is great difference on hdparm.

Hi,
I am looking to make a new computer and there has been a lot of buzz about raid. I found out that there are lots of raid options, like Raid 0, raid 1, raid 2 etc etc,

Can someone please explain what Raid is and how to set it up. I am looking for fast hard drive access with security that i wont lose data. Thanks!!!

Depends on the RAID config, some will support the loss of only 1 drive, others can support the loss of 2.
Generally if you have less than 5 drives then loss of two and you have lost all the data, if 5 or more drives then you can generaly recover from the loss of two.
Some systems even have a hot spare drive so that if a failure occurs, it switches the failed drives function to the hot spare immediately.
If you unplug raid drives and re-plug them in a different order, this will also screw the data.
System would slow up with the loss of any drives.
Basically as soon as you get a failure - replace the drive and pray it rebuilds before another failure occurs, you may want to replace it at close of business because the sytem will be slow while the RAID rebuilds itself.
